January Dev Diary: Warming up

Is it that time again? It’s the last day of the month, that means I have been summoned to my little corner of the internet for my (slightly) regular monthly dev log. As always, I’ll discuss what I’ve been up to, what’s new & what’s next. Let’s begin…

Last Month

In the last post, I set goals for the entire year rather than just the month. However, I did say there’s a game and a video to complete. Neither of which have been done…

You know It’s a rough month when the most productive thing I’ve done for the past 2 weeks is writing this dev log. As the month started things were going great, but it didn’t last. Let’s talk about what went right first, then why things went wrong.

Progress

Egg Ed

The first week or so was incredibly productive. I started by finishing the Egg Ed submission. The first version was already uploaded, including new eggs, advertisements & an extra life. You can now (finally) continue by watching an ad:

But I had to upload the second half of the update which included the ability to remove ads. Sure, I could have done this in one update, but I did it this way for a reason. All will be explained in the Egg Ed YouTube video (whenever that is).

Jelly Toss

Next came the Jelly Toss update, which was already finished luckily, it just needed uploading. This fixed a few bugs and added plenty of new features (listed in the last post).

That was the start of the month, it was plenty of building, uploading and altering the store pages. It’s not the most entertaining part of gamedev but it needs to be done!

Catalogue of assets

I own a lot of assets. If I see a bundle on offer that has a few interesting items I may find helpful I’m always tempted. So when a friend of mine on twitter sent me a Humble Bundle link that included 69 GUI packs, I had to grab it! UI is probably one of my least favourite jobs, especially since I’m only at the programmer art level. Now I have these to help (& more):

Anyway, I now have a massive collection of UI assets. Problem is, if there’s something I want searching through them is a massive pain and could be pretty time consuming. To solve this problem I got a printer, a binder and some plastic wallets and I think you see where this is going…

I spent the better part of a day setting up pages and printing, but overall I think it’s worth it. I can make a game, scan through the pages, see what fits, and easily find the package. Hopefully my games will start looking better too!

Buttons

With the old projects updated, it’s time to work on my new button pushing adventure. So far it’s not much of a game, so it was time to add the gameplay. Here’s what we have so far:

You get instructions, you complete them instructions, you press buttons. Simple. At this point there was only 3 set of instructions: Press X button, Press X button Y times & Press any button. The idea is there will be a handful of extra instructions, the timer will be shortened and the buttons will be randomly spawned in. It’s nothing ground-breaking but it’s a fun little side project. I was adding more until…

Big Break

Things were going well, and then I started feeling unwell. As far as I’m aware, It was only the flu but it knocked me out a few days. I didn’t even want to leave bed, I just watched films and played games. Very productive.

I put up with this for about a week, then I was getting very annoyed and bored. I posted this:

However, I think that was a little pre-emptive. I was eager to get back to work, I was out of bed, but I still wasn’t feeling myself. Long story short, I pushed myself, I wasn’t feeling up to it. This led to a lazy couple of weeks.
Back to it!

The month was almost over & half of it has been pretty lazy. I’ve managed to squeeze in some work, adding more instructions to the untitled button game. You can now: Hold button for X seconds, press nothing, and press X then Y (two different colours). Things are now a little more interesting:

Sadly, that’s all I had time for. After adding some extras I had to start writing up this if I wanted to post on time. Overall I don’t think I’ve done too bad, some progress is better than none.

Next Month

The plan doesn’t change, I’m back at it now and working through my to-do list. There’s a video and a game, both half finished. Both will be done!

I’m not focusing on anything else through February. The game is short and sweet, just like the month. It’s probably the smallest project I’ve done so far, should have been done weeks ago. I’ll get that out of the way first then finish up my video before something else stops me from recording.

Until next time…
